Observer® is a network analyzer for LAN, wireless 802.11 a/b/g, low-utilization gigabit, Token Ring and FDDI networks. Observer provides real-time metrics, packet capture, decode, trending and more for shared and switched environments.

Observer is a software-only, network monitoring and troubleshooting tool. Observer is a 64-bit application. A 32-bit version is also included. Observer can monitor wired LANs and 802.11 a/b/g networks. With the addition of Network Instruments’ software or hardware probes, Observer can monitor multi-segment networks including LAN, WAN, gigabit and wireless.

With the Network Instruments’ Distributed Network Analysis architecture, (NI-DNA™), Observer is unique in the network analysis industry. It’s the only analyzer built from a unified code set, offering scalability and seamless integration across the entire Observer product family. Network administrators need ony to learn one interface to monitor across topologies, locations, and technologies.

Available Configurations:

The WAN Observer Suite System (WOSS) is a complete, portable WAN analyzer for T1/E1 and/or HSSI/DS3/E3 circuits. Additionally, all WOSS systems include a 10/100/1000 analysis port for local LAN troubleshooting.

The WAN Observer Suite System delivers:

  • Real-time statistics for capacity planning and provider performance measurement
  • Real-time error displays for congestion determinations
  • Pinpoint WAN flow problems before they become WAN flow disasters
  • Long-term Trending for reporting and baselining
  • Complete capture and decode of all WAN traffic
  • Inexpensive Probes provide visibility locally or remotely
  • WAN speeds up to DS3 supported
  • Demarcation-point (digital) or between CSU/DSU and router (serial) monitoring options
  • Passive solution based on non-intrusive TAPs that can be left inline for easy insertion and removal of the analyzer without interruption of the data flow

The WAN Observer Suite System (WOSS) provides an affordable solution to monitor traffic flow, error metrics and long-term histories. Additionally, the WOSS offers a complete and independent view of your carrier’s performance and gives you the ability to pinpoint WAN problems in real-time.

The WOSS system provides comprehensive metrics for SLA verification, complete end-to-end application monitoring, long-term trending of statistics, user alarms and an expert system to help diagnose common WAN link problems.

Because the WOSS can integrate into the larger distributed Observer architecture, you can monitor your local WAN link, a remote link (the other side), and the network side of the WAN connection – all simultaneously.

The Rack-Mountable WAN Probe offers in circuit visibility for T1/E1 and/or HSSI/DS3/E3 networks – preconfigured and ready to run. Options for up to 16 WAN ports in one 4U Probe are available. Observer WAN Probes will report to any Expert Observer or Observer Suite console. WAN Probe Kits offer all port and density options as the rack-mountable Probe, but are designed to be installed in a user provided WinTel based system.
